Our client is a leading renewable energy company specializing in developing, owning, and operating utility-scale renewable energy projects across Africa and the Middle East, with a strong focus on solar, wind, and battery energy storage solutions.
Main Purpose of Role
Support Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects on techno-commercial matters in coordination with the Business Development (BD), Finance, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the BESS technical stream of bids in collaboration with external parties.
- Prepare the Owner's Technical Specification (OTS) for BESS, review BESS technical energy storage requirements, and evaluate guarantees requested in tenders or projects.
- Support Business Development (BD) and Finance teams in business development activities as requested by the Project Leader.
- Lead the implementation of energy simulations and energy management systems, incorporating BESS technologies.
- Lead the CAPEX, OPEX, and performance estimation for different BESS technologies, contributing to optimization processes.
- Oversee the technical design and optimization of all BESS plant parameters, ensuring alignment with project requirements and engaging with BESS solution providers and EPC contractors.
- Oversee BESS O&M preparation activities related to bids and proposals for BESS solutions.
- Negotiate with EPC contractors for BESS projects, ensuring favorable terms for the company.
- Support the commercial aspects of technical workstreams to ensure optimal commercial outcomes.
- Negotiate and finalize long-term contractual performance and O&M guarantees for BESS/Storage plants.
- Assist with due diligence on brownfield projects or asset acquisitions for BD activities.
- Lead the preparation and negotiation of technical annexes in PPA, EPC, and O&M contracts for BESS plants (Owner's Technical Specification, Performance Guarantees, and Performance Tests).
- Stay updated on the latest BESS technologies, trends, and innovations.

- Strong technical understanding of BESS technologies.
- Proficiency in energy management systems, including the implementation and simulation of energy storage solutions.
- Excellent negotiation skills, particularly in EPC and O&M contract negotiations for BESS projects.
- Analytical skills for assessing CAPEX, OPEX, and performance-related data.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to prepare detailed technical specifications, performance guarantees, and contractual agreements.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working across multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, ideally in Electrical, Power, or Energy Engineering. Master's degree in a relevant field is a plus.
- At least 7 years of experience in technical design and/or engineering roles within the renewable energy or power sector.
- Specific experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems is essential.
- Experience with the design, procurement, and implementation of renewable energy projects with BESS technologies.
- Familiarity with BESS operations, maintenance, and performance guarantees.
- Proven experience with EPC contract negotiations, including technical annexes and performance specifications.
- Understanding of energy storage systems, energy simulations, and system optimizations.
