Director Business Development
Our Client is a leading Japanese integrated investment group. Operating across the Middle East and Africa, the company focuses on a diverse range of sectors including power infrastructure, energy (including renewables), transportation systems, and metal products. In the region, they are actively involved in the development, financing, and operation of large-scale infrastructure projects such as power plants, water desalination facilities, and railway systems—often in partnership with governments and private sector entities. About the role
The Director – Business Development will be responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities, forging strategic partnerships, and driving revenue growth in the conventional and renewable energy infrastructure sector. This role requires a strong leader with a deep understanding of the energy landscape, excellent negotiation skills, and a proven track record in business development, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will be pivotal in shaping the company's expansion and increasing its impact within the renewable energy industry.
Responsibilities-
Business Development
- Lead and manage the business development strategy to drive new opportunities in conventional and renewable energy infrastructure projects (gas, solar, wind, hydro, battery energy storage, green H2/NH3 etc.).
- Identify and evaluate new business opportunities and potential partnerships, ensuring alignment with company goals and market trends.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, developers, investors, and other strategic partners.
- Conduct market research and analysis to stay ahead of emerging trends in the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors.
- Lead negotiations for new contracts, joint ventures, and partnerships to expand the company's project portfolio.
Project Development
- Select, drive, negotiate and conclude discussions with potential partners/investors about their interest in partnering with the Company in particular projects
- Prepares and negotiates partnership and/or shareholder agreements with partners/investor upon approval from the Company
- Support the definition and drive the company's strategy into business development
- Develop structure and negotiate all aspects of the considered projects, including but not limited to all project agreements such as PPA (or other types of offtake arrangements), EPC, LTSA, OMA, SHA etc.
- Lead Project specific multidisciplinary teams (at all levels) involved in the selected projects in order to deliver the project, including making proposals
- Handover projects to asset management for further execution, construction, and operations
- Manage acquisition negotiation processes of targeted opportunities
Stakeholder Relations
- Represents the company vis-à-vis project host country government officials, joint venture partners, suppliers/contractors, advisors, financial institutions, and other stakeholders in order to investment opportunities and to deliver them successfully
- Maintains and negotiates high level relationship with Senior Management of potential international joint venture partners, contractors, advisors and customers to make profitable arrangements for the business
Experience, Knowledge & Qualifications
- Minimum a Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Legal or related field
- A minimum of 12 years of relevant business development or project development experience
- Business experience with diverse conventional and renewable energy generation technologies (e.g., solar, wind, hydro, green H2/NH3 etc.) and understanding of associated competitive advantages, operational / financial risks, and project financing considerations
- Experience in an energy company or contractor leading international acquisitions, formation of joint venture partnerships, development of greenfield/brownfield power generation facilities, and arranging associated non/limited-recourse debt financing for such ventures
- Knowledge of diverse international and in particular regional energy market structures and industry competitive/strategic environments.
- Familiarity/experience with analysing national/regional electricity market fundamentals
- Relevant transactional / business experience in diverse power generation markets (mature, liberalizing, and emerging)
- IPP transactional, business development, and/or management experience in multiple developing and industrialized countries in particular in the company's target region, e.g. GCC, Middle East, Central Asia and Africa
- In-depth familiarity with international legal/regulatory, tax, accounting, and other matters relevant for financial, commercial, and contractual structuring of power plants, partnerships / joint ventures, and acquisitions
- Advanced project documentation, analytical, and interpersonal / presentation skills
- Familiarity and structuring / negotiation experience with commercial agreements and financing documentation
- Experience with structuring and preparing commercial bid proposals for renewable energy project development / acquisition, either in response to competitive tender processes or negotiated transaction opportunities

- Advanced cultural awareness/sensitivity and ability to lead, manage, and mentor internal employees and external advisor/consultant and joint venture partner staff of diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to represent the company professionally and interact effectively at all organizational levels with external parties (including Board of Directors/executive management and senior government officials)
- Ability to travel domestically and overseas as needed
- Foreign language capabilities and business experience in markets of current / planned company operations an advantage.
